How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

At West Michigan Plastic Surgery, we use the Forever Bare BBL™, a system that uses intensive light pulses to target and damage hair follicles. Laser hair removal works because your hair and roots usually contain more melanin than your skin. This pigment gives hair its color. When the light from the Forever Bare BBL™ strikes a hair root inside the follicle, it causes the pigments to heat up, damaging the follicle so it cannot regrow hair.

The Forever Bare BBL™ provides a comfortable laser hair removal experience using its sapphire cooling plate to maintain your skin’s temperature. It also uses a broad spectrum of light to treat different hair and skin tones safely.

Where Can I Have Laser Hair Removal?

You can have laser hair removal nearly anywhere on your body except around the eyes. Popular locations for laser hair removal include:

  • Legs
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Face
  • Bikini area

Because the light energy targets the more heavily pigmented hair follicles and not your skin, Forever Bare BBL™ is safe on even sensitive areas.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Laser hair removal can only treat hair follicles in their active phase. Follicles in a dormant phase have no hair growing from them, so the Forever Bare BBL™ cannot target them. As your treated follicles become inactivated, other follicles will start growing hairs. Most people need between six and eight treatments to catch all follicles during an active phase. These will be spaced four to eight weeks apart to give more follicles time to become active.

Is There Any Downtime With Laser Hair Removal?

Your skin may feel sensitive and warm, like a minor sunburn. This should go away after a few hours. You can go back to your usual activities, but make sure to use sun protection on the treated area while it recovers. Avoid using harsh or irritating products on the skin for a few days.

What Results Will I See With Laser Hair Removal?

Your hair-free skin may last months or up to a few years. You will eventually start to see some fine stray hairs reappear. Maintenance treatment once a year can target these stray hairs to keep your skin soft and smooth.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

If you have unwanted hair on your face or body, you may be a good candidate for laser hair removal. Ideal candidates have hair that is noticeably darker than the skin. People with pale red, blond, or gray hair may not have enough pigment for laser hair removal to work well.
