What Is Nose Surgery?

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or nose job surgery, is a surgical procedure that is done to adjust the shape, size, or contour of the nose. The goal of rhinoplasty is to create a nose that fits with the rest of your face without sacrificing its unique shape and character.

Reshaping the nose may include one or a combination of the following:

  • Increasing of decreasing the size of the nose
  • Sculpting the shape of the tip
  • Removing a hump
  • Decreasing the size of the nostrils
  • Narrowing or widening the bridge of the nose

Candidates For Nose Surgery

People who are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose as well as individuals with breathing problems or significant nasal deformity are good candidates for nose surgery. Candidates for rhinoplasty should be in good health and have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with surgery. They should also be psychologically ready for surgery.

How Does It Work?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that may be carried out under general or local anesthesia. Surgery typically takes about 2-3 hours.

Rhinoplasty may be performed using an open or closed technique. With closed rhinoplasty, all the incisions for surgery are made on the interior of the nose.

Incisions for open rhinoplasty are also made inside the nose but an external incision is made across the columella. The columella is the cartilage that separates the nostrils.

Each rhinoplasty surgery is unique and specifically tailored to each patient’s aesthetic goals and nasal anatomy. Bone and cartilage may be removed or reshaped to address a dorsal hump. Cartilage may be removed, sutured, or even augmented to achieve nasal tip refinement. Nostrils can be reshaped or reduced as needed.

At the conclusion of surgery, splints will be applied to maintain and protect the nasal shape during healing.

Results

While immediate improvement will be visible, nose surgery is known for requiring patience. The variability of recovery depends on many factors and final results often take 6-12 months to become fully appreciated.

Recovery

After rhinoplasty, a splint will remain in place for up to 1 week. There is usually some swelling and bruising, and the nose will feel puffy and sore. Most of the swelling should resolve within 2-3 weeks, but residual swelling may remain for up to 6 months. Final results can take up to 12 months to show.
