Sculpt Your Ideal Body Shape

If you are already on a healthy lifestyle journey but have stubborn pockets of fat in a few areas that diet and exercise can’t fix, liposuction can help sculpt the figure you want. Liposuction is fat removal surgery and should not be considered an alternative to weight loss.

At West Michigan Plastic Surgery we help women and men in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids achieve a toned, proportionate figure with liposuction. Dr. Scott Holley has extensive experience performing liposuction and keeps pace with the latest advances, so he provides beautiful cosmetic results for his patients.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction or fat removal surgery is a procedure that removes excess fat below the skin and reshapes the body. The goal of liposuction is to improve specific body contours by targeting unresponsive fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, and knees. Fat removal surgery is customized to meet the needs and goals of each patient.

Good Candidates For Liposuction

Liposuction is ideal for people of average body weight who have isolated pockets of fat they would like removed. Candidates should also be healthy and have firm, elastic skin because liposuction does not tighten the skin.

Liposuction is fat removal only, so patients with both loose skin and fat will likely be better candidates for excisional surgery. Liposuction, though, is often combined with other excisional surgeries to provide maximal contour enhancement. Ideal candidates should maintain a healthy lifestyle, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about surgery.

Your Liposuction Consultation

Dr. Holley takes the time to understand the goals and expectations each patient has of fat removal surgery. He is open to any questions patients have about the procedure including the surgical approach, post-operative discomfort, recovery, and financing options.

Patients should ask as many questions as they need to gain clarity so that they can make an informed decision about liposuction. Liposuction is often combined with other cosmetic procedures such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thigh lift, for optimal body contouring. During your consultation, Dr. Holley will review your treatment options, discuss common risks, and provide a recommended treatment plan.

How Does It Work?

Dr. Holley performs surgery using the tumescent liposuction technique. Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a tumescent solution containing a mixture of local anesthetic and saline into the subcutaneous fat beneath the skin. The tumescent solution constricts the blood vessels and significantly reduces blood loss during surgery.

Small incisions are made in the treatment area through which a cannula or thin tube is inserted. The cannula is used to loosen and suction the targeted fat.

Results

After liposuction, patients will gradually notice improvements in body shape as the swelling goes down. It could take several months to see the full results of fat removal surgery. The post-procedural results of liposuction are long-lasting, provided you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Recovery

Common side-effects of liposuction include swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area. A compression garment is worn for several weeks to minimize side-effects and help with healing. Recovery time varies depending on the number of areas treated, but patients typically need to take a week off work. Strenuous activities can be resumed within 2-3 weeks.
