A double chin, or submental fat, is a common cosmetic concern affecting both men and women. It is characterized by the accumulation of excess fat beneath the chin, creating a bulging or sagging appearance. Dr. Holley and his team offer several double chin treatments to help you achieve a slimmer neck

What Causes a Double Chin?

Several factors contribute to the development of a double chin. Genetics play a strong role, and if your parents or other family members have a double chin, you may be more likely to develop one. Aging also plays a role, as the skin and muscles in the neck area lose elasticity over time, leading to sagging and drooping. Weight gain is also a contributing factor, as excess fat can accumulate in the neck and chin area.

What’s the Best Treatment for a Double Chin?

To meet your needs, Dr. Holley and the West Michigan Plastic Surgery team offer surgical and non-surgical ways to eliminate your double chin. The choice between surgical and non-surgical treatment focuses on your needs and lifestyle.

People with less time for recovery may prefer a non-surgical option, while those with significant sagging around the neck will benefit more from a surgical procedure. Surgical procedures produce more dramatic results than non-surgical ones, especially when treating loose or sagging skin. However, only some people need surgical treatment to address their double chin

How Does Kybella® Treat a Double Chin?

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that eliminates excess fat beneath the chin. The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is found naturally in the digestive system, where it helps the body break up and absorb dietary fat.

Kybella® double chin treatment typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Most people require two to four treatments to achieve optimal results, and each is spaced several weeks apart. You will not have downtime but can expect some redness, sensitivity, and swelling in the treatment area.

How Does a Neck Lift Treat a Double Chin?

A neck lift tightens the skin and muscles in the neck and chin area. During the procedure, incisions are made either under the chin or behind the ears, allowing the surgeon to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying muscles. A neck lift may also include liposuction to remove submental fat.

A neck lift is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours to complete, depending on the extent of the surgery. Most people will need to take a week or two off from work to recover.

Am I a Good Candidate for Double Chin Treatment?

Kybella® or a neck lift can provide a long-lasting double chin treatment. Most people make good candidates for at least one of these two options. Those with submental (under the chin) fat but good skin elasticity may love their results with Kybella®, while those with submental fat and loose skin may need a neck lift to see the desired sculpted look.
