About Blepharoplasty AKA Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery or eyelid lift surgery. This surgery is designed to correct any signs of aging around the eye area.

This treatment can be carried out on the lower eyelids, upper eyelids, or both. Lower blepharoplasty will correct bags under the eyes and sagging lower eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty helps to deal with droopy upper eyelids.

Blepharoplasty Purposes

The aim of blepharoplasty is to achieve a more youthful and alert appearance. Those with droopy eyelids can often look tired at all times, and it can make people look more aged too.

Blepharoplasty is an effective way of dealing with this. It is also beneficial for anyone who is experiencing vision issues because of their droopy eyelids. Therefore, it is not only an important procedure in terms of appearance and confidence but health as well.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

The procedure tends to take between one and two hours to complete. The procedure differs depending on whether you need lower or upper eyelid surgery.

For lower eyelid surgery, the incision’s location will be determined by the issue being addressed. For example, the incision will be made just below your eyelashes if you are having excess skin removed.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incision will be made at your eye’s natural fold, resulting in an indiscernible scar. Excess fat and skin will be taken away, and then sutures are used to close the incision.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

After the surgery, it is normal to feel tightness around your eyes. You may also encounter eye dryness, bruising, and selling. We recommend utilizing a cold compress to lower the swelling and bruising.

A few days after the surgery, you should notice that these side-effects start to subside gradually.

Some people do encounter temporary blurring, light sensitivity, and excess tearing for a few weeks after they have had eyelid surgery, so do keep this in mind. Double vision is also a possibility for a few weeks, but it should not persist.

Should I Consider Blepharoplasty?

If you have droopy upper eyelids, which are interfering with your peripheral vision, this would make you a great candidate for blepharoplasty.

It is also suitable if you have bags under your eyes that don’t seem to budge.

At West Michigan Plastic Surgery, we will always start with a consultation so that we can explain the procedure in full, ensure you are a good candidate, and that your expectations are realistic.
