How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During a laser hair removal treatment at West Michigan Plastic Surgery, we use the Forever Bare BBL™ system, which concentrates a broad spectrum of light to target the melanin (pigment) at the base of the hair follicle. The absorption process of the follicle converts the light to heat, which damages the center of the follicle. The now-damaged follicle cannot continue growing hair, so it is shed, and a dormant follicle becomes active in its place.

Your subsequent laser hair removal treatment will then target the newly active follicles, resulting in their shedding, too. This process continues until no more active growth remains and your skin is smooth and hair-free.

With multiple spot sizes for the Forever Bare BBL™ handpiece, we can treat very large areas quickly and comfortably. The thermoelectrically-cooled sapphire plate prevents the skin from becoming overheated during treatment, so you remain comfortable throughout the session.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction, but some stray strands will appear periodically. These are easily treated through maintenance sessions to keep the treated area hair-free.  The new strands are finer and less noticeable than before. If there are a few strands, they’re far less dense than when you started laser hair removal treatments.

Many people that undergo laser hair removal experience hair-free skin for around 2 years after receiving the recommended number of sessions.  However, this timeline differs by patient. Individual results may vary due to factors such as the area being treated, hair thickness and density, and hormone levels.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Do I Need?

Most patients need 6-8 laser hair removal treatments to achieve optimal hair reduction Several treatments are required to get the best results because hair grows in stages, and lasers only target hair in the active or growing stage of the growth cycle.

Are you ready to give laser hair removal a try? It’s a safe, long-lasting solution for unwanted hair on areas such as the legs, face, bikini line, underarms, and upper lip.
