Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Women choose to undergo breast augmentation for several personal and aesthetic reasons. The procedure can:

  • Enlarge small breasts
  • Improve the shape of breasts
  • Achieve more attractive cleavage
  • Enhance self-confidence
  • Improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts
  • Restore breast volume lost through childbirth, weight loss or aging
  • Revise a previous breast augmentation
  • Improve appearance in lingerie and swimsuits

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You must be in good overall health to undergo breast augmentation. Additionally, you should:

  • Be at least 18 years old (for saline implants) or 22 (for silicone implants)
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
  • Not smoke, or be willing to quit smoking before surgery and throughout your recovery
  • Have enough natural breast tissue to cover the implant

The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate is to schedule a breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Holley. In your consultation, he will discuss your aesthetic goals, thoroughly explain the breast augmentation procedure, perform a physical examination, and develop a personalized surgical plan based on your physique. Your consultation will include conversations about your breast implant options, such as:

  • Types of breast implants
  • Implant size
  • Breast implant incision locations
  • Breast implant placement options

Types of Breast Implants

You will get to choose from among three types of breast implants for your augmentation. Each has its benefits, and you should decide based on which best meets your aesthetic goals.

  • Saline implants are silicone outer shells that are filled with a sterile saline solution after they’re inserted into your breasts. This allows Dr. Holley to use smaller incisions. Saline implants are more prone to leakage and rupture than silicone implants, but in the event of a leak, the saline solution is naturally absorbed by your body.
  • Silicone implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a silicone gel. Silicone is thicker than saline, so these implants have a more natural look and feel. They are also less prone to leakage and rupture. If they do rupture, they also hold their shape better.
  • Gummy bear implants are a newer form of silicone implants that are filled with a cohesive, form-stable silicone gel. They have a teardrop shape that more naturally conforms to the anatomical contours of your breast than traditional, rounded implants. They are also often textured, which allows the breast tissue to grow into them. This drastically reduces the chances of implant rotation.

Breast Implant Size

The size of breast implants you can get depends on multiple factors, such as:

  • Your height and weight
  • Your chest and breast dimensions
  • Your skin elasticity
  • Your lifestyle and level of physical activity

Try to come into your consultation with an open mind about the size of the implants you want to receive. Breast implants are not measured in cup sizes but in cubic centimeters. This allows for a more uniform system of measurement because cup sizes can differ between bra manufacturers.

Breast Implant Incision Locations

You have several options for the location of your incisions. Dr. Holley will recommend the one that best accomplishes your aesthetic goals:

  • Inframammary incisions: These are made in the natural folds under your breasts, where the scar is hidden discreetly. They also help preserve nipple sensation.
  • Periareolar incisions: These incisions are made around the border of your nipple, where the tissue around your areolas will conceal the scars.
  • Transaxillary incisions: These incisions are made under your armpits and result in no scarring around your breasts.

Breast Implant Placement Options

Dr. Holley utilizes two basic placement positions for breast implants. As with your implant type and incision location, you and Dr. Holley will choose the placement that best meets your needs:

  • Subglandular: This places your implants beneath your breast glands but above your chest muscle. Dr. Holley recommends this approach for women who have a larger amount of existing breast tissue or want to create a more defined cleavage line. Athletic women who frequently exercise their chest muscles may also prefer this placement.
  • Submuscular: Holley prefers to use this approach with women who have less existing breast tissue or who want a gentler, softer curve from their upper chest to their breasts. Your implants will be placed behind your breast glands and partially behind your chest muscles.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Your choice of breast implant size, type, placement, and incision location will determine the specifics of your breast augmentation surgery, but all procedures follow the same basic steps and are performed on an outpatient basis.

  • You will be given general anesthesia and made comfortable in our surgery center.
  • Holley will make the incisions and place your implants according to your discussions during the consultation.
  • Holley will close the incision. The entire procedure should take one to two hours.
  • A nurse will monitor you in the recovery room until you’re ready to be driven home.

Dr. Holley and his attentive, caring staff will ensure you know what to expect the day of the procedure. He’ll also be available afterward to discuss your questions and will plan a follow-up session to make sure you’re healing comfortably.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Recovery time varies from patient to patient. It depends on numerous factors, such as your natural healing ability and the particulars of your procedure. You’ll experience pain in the aftermath of your procedure, but it will subside after a couple of days. Soreness and swelling could last up to several weeks.

Dr. Holley will give you a compression garment to help support your breasts and reduce swelling. Supporting your breasts as your implants settle after your procedure is essential. It’s vital that you follow Dr. Holley’s post-operative instructions during this period and delay wearing sports bras or underwire bras until he clears you to do so. It takes time for your implants to settle and your incisions to heal, but you’ll be rewarded for your patience.breast augmentation patient

Here’s a broad timeline for breast augmentation recovery:

  • 1-2 weeks before you can return to work
  • 30 days before you can wear a sports bra
  • 6 weeks before you can resume strenuous activities
  • 3 months until you can wear underwire bras

Breast Augmentation with a Breast Lift

If you’re unhappy with any sagging of your breasts, Dr. Holley can perform a breast lift at the same time you receive implants. Your implants will improve your breast size and the appearance of your cleavage, while a breast lift can address:

  • Drooping, sagging breasts
  • Enlarged areolas
  • Uneven nipple shape and position

Typically, breast lifts involve elevating the nipples and areolas to a higher position, then removing excess skin, repositioning breast tissue, and reshaping breast skin for a natural look. When performed with a breast augmentation, implants are usually placed in your breasts before the breast lift. That’s because your implants fill loose skin and reduce the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed.

Breast Augmentation and Mammograms

During breast augmentation consultations, women often ask Dr. Holley whether their implants could interfere with mammograms. Augmented breasts may require adjustments from mammogram technicians, but they don’t prevent accurate screenings.

You should tell your mammogram technician that you have breast implants so they can make the necessary adjustments during your screening. Some breast augmentation options also make the mammogram process even easier. For example, submuscular implants require less of an adjustment by the mammogram technician.

Breast Implants and Breastfeeding

Many women also ask Dr. Holley if their breast augmentation will interfere with breastfeeding. Fortunately, it won’t. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not get breast implants, but having breast implants does not affect your ability to have kids or breastfeed them in the future.

If you’re concerned about breast augmentation potentially affecting your ability to breastfeed your future children, you could always opt for transaxillary incisions that avoid cutting into your breast at all. There is also no evidence that breast implant material could affect the quality of your breast milk.

Breast Implant Revision

Breast implants are durable and can last for many years. If you’re happy with how your breasts look and haven’t experienced capsular contracture or a rupture, your implants could last up to 15 years. They will eventually wear out and need to be replaced, though.

There are several common reasons why women get their breast augmentation revised:

  • Remove and replace a ruptured implant
  • Improve the appearance of an augmentation with which you’re unsatisfied
  • Improve complications, such as capsular contracture
  • Change the size of your implants
  • Correct implants that have rotated

Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Dr. Holley will place the implant in one of two basic positions:

Above the muscle (subglandular) placement: This breast augmentation approach is generally appropriate for Michigan women who have a larger amount of existing breast tissue and want to create a more defined cleavage line. Typically, recovery from this approach is also slightly faster. Dr. Holley places the implant behind the breast glands but above the chest muscles.

Below the muscle (submuscular) placement: This approach is highly effective for women who have very little existing breast tissue or who want to achieve a softer, gentler curve from the upper chest to the breast mound. Dr. Holley places the implant behind the breast glands and partially behind the pectoralis muscles of the chest, creating a contour that looks and feels very natural.

Here at West Michigan Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between one and two hours. Depending on the surgical approach you and your surgeon choose, any scarring will be hidden either in the armpit, within the “inframammary” fold under the breast, or at the edge of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).

Dr. Holley and our attentive, caring staff will make sure you know what to expect before the day of your surgery, and afterward he will be available to address any concerns. He will also plan a follow-up session to verify that you are healing comfortably.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Patients generally can return to light activities within three or four days and ease into more intensive activities within two weeks. Strenuous exercises should be avoided until about the third week, though you may need to wait longer depending on such unique factors as your healing speed, fitness level, and whether or not you underwent any combination procedures.
