Achieve Your Ideal Breast Shape

If you’ve had breast augmentation, at some point in time you may need to have breast implant removal and revision surgery. Women that elect to have breast augmentation revision surgery typically do so to change the size of their original implants, replace a ruptured implant, or correct complications. Whatever the reason, breast augmentation revision must be precisely performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

Scott Holley MD, FACS, of West Michigan Plastic Surgery is a highly experienced expert in breast augmentation revision surgery and has been providing women in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids with aesthetically pleasing outcomes for many years. During your consultation, Dr. Holley will listen to your concerns about your previous breast augmentation, and offer options to improve the results.

What Is Breast Implant Removal and Revision?

Breast augmentation revision surgery is done to revise the results of prior breast augmentation surgery. It involves the removal or replacement of the existing breast implants. Breast implant replacement may be done for various reasons including, to change the size of the breast implants, or to correct complications such as implant malposition, implant rupture, rippling, breast pain, and capsular contracture.

Candidates For Breast Implant Removal and Revision

Women that are experiencing complications with their existing breast implants or are dissatisfied with the type or size of their implants are good candidates for breast implant replacement. Some women opt to undergo removal of their breast implants entirely. Others may choose implant replacement combined with a breast lift or mastopexy. Candidates for breast augmentation revision should also be healthy, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the procedure.

How Does It Work?

Breast augmentation revision is done to correct problems that have developed with existing breast implants, so the procedure won’t be the same for every patient. It generally involves removing the implants, adjusting the breast pocket and surrounding tissue as required, and inserting new implants.

Breast augmentation revision may include the following:

  • Breast implant replacement: Changing the size or style of the original breast implant. Implants may also need to be replaced due to an implant rupture, implant rippling, or implant malposition.
  • Correcting Capsular Contracture: Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms and tightens around the breast implant, causing the breasts to become hard and painful. During surgery, Dr. Holley will remove the capsule and insert a new breast implant.
  • Breast Lift: You may decide to have a breast lift done along with breast implant removal to uplift sagging, droopy breasts.

Breast augmentation revision is performed under general anesthesia and takes 1-3 hours to perform.

Results

There is typically some mild swelling and bruising after breast augmentation revision surgery. Immediate improvement will be visible but final results can take up to 6 weeks.

Recovery

The recovery after breast augmentation revision is often easier than a primary breast augmentation surgery. Mild discomfort and swelling should be expected. Most women are able to return to work and light activity after one week, but a physically demanding job may require additional time off.
